This is a challenge my mom and grandma gave me when I first got married right out of high school. Yes, I married my high school sweetheart.

We were NOT budgeting pros by any means. So, we needed an easy way to budget.

What is a simple budget?

It’s a budget that anyone could do.

As I mentioned above, when I got married I had never touched a budget.

A simple budget should be easy enough that a teenager or someone who’s never managed a budget could easily manage in a way that helps them pay for needs, save money, and pay off debt.

The budget challenge below is really simple. It’s a great way to start on a path towards keeping a budget and turning into a person who doesn’t stress about money, but has money for what they need and more.

Easiest Budget Challenge for Beginners

Read and follow the challenge or print out the printable workbook below to guide you through it!

Here is the challenge:

1. Write all your down wants and needs
2. Write down your income after paying for the needs
3. Divide what’s left over to put towards debt, savings, and wants/entertainment
4. Stick to your budget until debt is paid off, then divide what’s left over between savings and your wants

First you need to make some lists. The first list will have all your wants and the second will have all your needs.

Easy right?

Figuring out Wants and Needs

Wants are going to be things you can live without and needs are going to be everything you can’t live without.

Wants Examples: Cable, new car, coffee, date night, new pet, video games, fancy clothes, etc.

Needs: Groceries, electricity, housing, phone, water, etc.

You get the point, these are easy things to point out. Your needs are going to be the bills and expenses that you need to live every day life and your wants are the things you can put aside.

Now that you have your wants and needs written down it’s time to plan a simple budget.

Having Money for Savings, Debt, and Entertainment

Taking your total monthly income you can subtract your monthly needs (living expenses).

Now, decide how much of what’s left over you want to put towards savings, debt, and entertainment. You could divide what’s leftover equally between the 3 or put a little more into debt.

For example, if you are willing to give up some of your entertainment money, you can put that into debt and pay your debt off faster.

Then when the debt is paid off you will have even more for entertainment and savings.

Prioritizing Debt

This is a simple budget, so I won’t go too much into this. But, it may be a good idea to take a look at the debts you have and prioritize them in a way that’s best for you.

You could do this in several ways. Listing the debt from the greatest to smallest interest, greatest to smallest amount, or smallest to greatest amount.

Decide which debt you want to pay off first and think about putting a little more towards that particular debt each month.

How do I make a successful budget plan?

To make sure you are successful with your budget you can do several things.

• Make budgeting a habit- Track your daily and monthly spending as well as expenses. Utilize an app on your phone, workbook, planner, or calendar to keep you on track.
• Create money goals- Make a list of goals for your budget. How much you want to save, which debts you want to pay off and when, how much extra side money would you like to earn? Write them down into realistic goals that are easy to achieve. Start small (Ex. Saving $100 for an emergency fund) so you don’t have the risk of failing.
• Communicate with your spouse- Plan your budget out with your spouse. Discuss your plan and money saving goals. This way you can work through them together and hold each other accountable for the budget.
• Don’t give up- Budgeting is like dieting, even though I am horrible at dieting. If you mess up with your budget, don’t give up. Just start from scratch with a clear mindset and maybe better more realistic goals for getting your budget on track. It may take baby steps, but remember any change you’re making in planning a budget is positive.

When have I completed the Budget Challenge?

You may think the budget challenge is over once the debt is gone. However, it’s smart to continue your budget for the long term so you know where your money is going and don’t find yourself in more debt.

Once you’ve mastered an easy budget you can try increasing your challenges. Saving more money, planning bigger saving goals, and maybe even getting into investing.

Making Money Online

We are living in a digital age, which means there really are a lot of ways to earn an income or make some extra side money online.

The catch, earning money online often takes time.

I was lucky to have time on my side and a patient husband who let me experiment in all things “earning an income from home” before I really started earning.

It took a year for me to start earning a decent part time income, but there are definitely ways you can earn money from home faster!

What Can You Sell to Make Money?

The first thing to do when you’re in a bind is look through your stuff.

Do you have stuff hidden away in the garage or attic? Gifts you never opened or used? Things laying around collecting dust and creating clutter?

These are great places to look for things to sell.

You can sell anything from old textbooks, baby gear, electronics, old phones, you name it!

Look up your items on Amazon or Ebay to see how much they are going for and how they are selling.

If you need more immediate cash take a look on Facebook to see if your city has any local yard sale groups.

I’ve seen people go crazy in these types of groups for used furniture, children’s toys, old LEGO’s, kid’s books, shoes, electronics.

One man’s trash is literally another’s treasure online.

This is a great way to put some fast cash into your pocket!

Can you make money from social media?

Yes! If you have a large following on social media take advantage of that.

One of my favorite ways to earn money from social media is through Ebates.

Here’s how you can use Ebates to earn on social media:

1. Join Ebates to earn a quick $10
2. Earn cash back whenever you make a purchase through Ebates
3. Share your referral link on social media to earn a referral reward of $25 for each person you refer!

One of the main ways I earn an income online is through my social media following and blog! You can read about how I started earning a part time income blogging in a year on my personal blog.

Selling Services

Do some brainstorming.

Do you have any skills that you can sell?

There are plenty of people that need lawn services, dog walkers, grocery shoppers, caterers, electric work, handy work, babysitters, and house cleaners.

If you are a stay at home mom, could you take on a few extra kids for babysitting cash? I often see need for sitters in local church and mom groups. Visit Care.com too to see what jobs they have available.

Advertise your services online! It could be in a Facebook yard sale group, Craigslist, or local moms group.

Come up with a reasonable hourly wage and see if anyone could use you for that service. This is a great way to earn some quick cash on the side!

Crowdfunding

If you are going through a personal crisis and need immediate help consider starting a crowdfunding account online through a site like GoFundMe.

I’ve seen people raise money this way for funeral, medical, and emergency expenses.

Family and friends may be able to help you out with hospital bills from an illness or repair costs from a house fire.

So, how can you teach this at home? I like to start with creating some simple, easy to follow goals.

1. Saving Coins

   Have your kids make a goal to completely fill their piggy bank or a jar full of coins before they can spend it.

   It’s easy for kids to get in the habit of wanting to take coins out of their piggy bank when they want something small like a candy.

   Teach them that if they save their coins it will turn into more money for something bigger.

2. Earning an Allowance

   Earning an allowance sounds easy enough, but are your kids completing all their chores to earn their allowance each week?

   We have different allowance tiers for what our kids do each week. For example, if they complete their basic chores they get $5, but if they do extra harder chores they get $10.

   An easy goal for them is to save this allowance money, the more money they earn the faster their savings add up.

3. Saving for Something Big

   Do your kids want something big, like a new video game or bike?

   Have them make a goal to save for this item. You can help them plan out how much it costs and how much they need to save per week before they can get it.

   Set a goal to get it by a certain date. This is such a great way to teach responsibility and that things don’t come for free.

4. Extra Fun Money

   We give our kids a souvenir allowance for vacations and special events, but sometimes they want more.

   Make a special envelope for your kids to save fun money. Make a goal with them to save up a little fun money with their allowance.

   Whenever you go on vacation or to an event like a local fair have them decide if they want to pull their envelope out for extra fun money!

5. Keeping a List

   Make a goal with your kids to keep a list!

   Here are some of the different money saving lists they could make

• A Simple Budget– Older kids can learn a simple budget. Teach them how to keep a journal of how much money they have, how much they spend, what they are saving. Great skills to have when they grow.
• Things to Save For– Have them make a list of things they want to save their money for. They can check things off as they save money and add new items.
• Inventory– Have them write down a list of the money they have and where they are keeping it safe. They can look at their list to know how much they have for what they want to buy.
• Ways to Make Money– Have your kids brainstorm ways they can make money. Maybe they can have a yard sale with your help, do extra chores, or look for coins in the couch cushions.

What if your child is too young to earn money?

Do you have little ones? How can you make money goals with them?

I think with little ones it’s good to talk with them about money. Buy a toy cash register and play store with them.

Take them shopping with you and talk to them while you shop.

Let them see you making good money choices. They may not completely understand, but little ones watch you and learn from you.

There are lots of easy ways to make money goals with your kids young and old. You can even take it a step further and make some money goals as a family!
